Touchdowns vs. Trumpets

The subject of funding school sport programs vs. school band programs has created some lively debates among school boards and communities across Canada.  Every year, school boards face tough decisions about where to spend limited budgets. Too often, the arts—especially music programs like band—end up on the chopping block while sport programs continue to maintain their funding.

If we really want to invest in our students’ futures, school band programs deserve the same support, if not more, than sports.

Why?????

Band Improves Academics

Students in band score higher in math, reading, and science. That’s not a guess—that’s research. Learning music through a school band program strengthens the brain. It teaches pattern recognition, improves memory, and boosts problem-solving skills. Playing an instrument is like a full-body brain workout. It combines physical coordination, listening, reading, and creative thinking—all at the same time.

Music Builds Lifelong Skills

Sports teach teamwork, setting goals, and discipline—but so does band. In fact, music students often develop better time management and self-discipline because they practice on their own, attend rehearsals, and perform under pressure. More importantly, music is something you can carry for life. Most people stop playing sports after high school. But music? You can join a community band, or just play for your own joy well into your 80s.

Band Includes Everyone

School sports can be very exclusive. Not everyone makes the team. Some students are left out because of physical ability, size, or skill level. Band is different. If you’re willing to work hard and learn, you can be a part of a amazing group. It’s a space where students of all backgrounds and abilities come together to make something beautiful. That’s a powerful lesson in inclusion and community.

Band Brings the School (and Community) Together

So do sport programs but school musicals, festivals, parades, graduation ceremonies, and community events are filled with performing students from the school band program. They’re the soundtrack of school spirit and civic pride.

School Band Programs Creates Global Citizens

Music is universal. It connects cultures, teaches empathy, and encourages creativity. These are the kinds of skills the world desperately needs more of—especially in a future full of automation and A.I.

Sports might teach students how to compete, but band programs teaches them how to collaborate, communicate, and create.

We all love sports and sport programs are essential to the overall school experience but the debate is about lifting up school band programs to the same level. Our schools need balance. Right now, there are schools where the balance is off. Band programs isn’t just an “extra.” It’s essential as well. It builds smarter students, stronger communities, and more creative minds. We don't have to choose between touchdowns or trumpets - just find a way to have both on a equal playing field. Let’s give school band programs the support—and respect—it deserves.
